"BrahMos missile "
- 20 years ago on 12 June 2001, First-time BrahMos missile was tested at the Integrated Test Range of the DRDO in Orissa’s Chandipur. It is a supersonic cruise missile.
- A joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India (DRDO) and the NPOM of Russia.
- Brahmos is named on the rivers Brahmaputra(India) and Moskva (Russia).
- Capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against the surface and sea-based targets.
- It is a two-stage propulsion system (solid propellant engine in the first stage and liquid ramjet in the second).
- One of the fastest cruise missile in the world with the speed of Mach 2.8, which is 3 times more than the speed of sound.
- Its range was initially capped at 290 km, but India’s entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the range has been extended to 450 km.
- Advanced versions of the range above 1,000 kilometres and speed up to 5 Mach are said to be under development.
- BrahMos was inducted into service by the Indian Navy in 2005 and the Indian Army in 2007.
- It was successfully tested in Su-30MKI in 2017."
